AI Optimization (AIO) is the practice of structuring your web presence so that AI engines — ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews — find it, trust it, and cite it when answering users.

**AI Optimization (AIO)** is the discipline of making your content and brand legible and credible to AI systems, so they surface and cite you when they answer a user's question. It is the umbrella term over two narrower practices: [GEO](/articles/what-is-geo.html) (Generative Engine Optimization) and [AEO](/articles/answer-engine-optimization-aeo.html) (Answer Engine Optimization).

## Why it matters

As AI answers replace some of the traditional click — AI Overviews cut clicks to the top result by around 58% on the queries where they appear (Ahrefs, 2025) — being the *source* an AI quotes becomes as valuable as ranking. AIO is how you compete for that citation.
